Dhiraagu has donated over 1500 reusable bags to support the single use plastic bag ban initiative by Vaavu Keyodhoo island. This initiative is a massive leap forward in fighting global warming and becoming a environmentally friendly island, by outlawing the use of single use plastic bags.
This venture, dubbed “single use plastic bag free island”, will bring about a sufficient change in the lifestyles of the residents. Moreover it would benefit the island both economically and in terms of environmental awareness with the coming of the underwater museum. From January 2017 on wards the council will provide environmentally friendly bags for every household and business establishment in the island.
The island is also going to establish the first underwater museum in the country and will hope to gain more tourists because of it. The museum will showcase the importance of marine environment to survival of locals & gain international exposure.
Vaavu Keyodhooo council is undertaking this project in partnership one of the Maldives’ leading PR and Marketing firm; Maldives Getaways. In a press release issued by Keyodhoo Council, it was stated that the decision was made to ensure that the island and its inhabitants are environmentally friendly and help conserve the island and its nearby waters .
